About the Parish

Brusje

Brusje is a village on the island of Hvar, part of the City of Hvar in the Split-Dalmatia County, Republic of Croatia. It sits at approximately 300 metres above sea level in the island's interior, surrounded by a stony landscape, dry-stone walls, and traditional agricultural land.

This place is marked by the simplicity of Mediterranean life, the proximity of the sea, and a deep connection between its people, their faith, and the heritage of their ancestors.

The Church of St. George

The parish church of St. George stands in the centre of Brusje and has served as the spiritual heart of the village for centuries. According to the research of historian Joško Kovačić, the church has a long and layered history reaching deep into the past of the island of Hvar.

It is dedicated to St. George, patron of the parish and the village, whose figure — a courageous witness to the faith — symbolises steadfastness, courage, and trust in Christ. Throughout history, the church has been a place of prayer, gathering, and communal celebration of the sacraments.

More detailed historical information about the church and parish can be found in the works of Joško Kovačić, who thoroughly researched the sacred heritage of the island of Hvar.

The Community

The Parish of St. George in Brusje belongs to the Diocese of Hvar (Hvarska biskupija). It gathers the faithful of Brusje and the surrounding area, as well as those from Brusje who live elsewhere but remain connected to their parish at heart.

Throughout the liturgical year, all major feasts are celebrated, with the feast of St. George, patron of the parish, being observed with particular solemnity. The parish is not merely an administrative unit, but a living community of believers in which faith is nourished by the Word of God and the sacraments, and is concretely expressed through mutual solidarity and service.
